5 thoughts NOT to think if you want to lose weight

There are SO many thoughts that get in our own way and sabotage our weight loss goals and progress. I could not possibly touch on them all.

But as a life and weight loss coach with regular clients, I hear a few of the same types of thoughts regarding weight loss, and I see how they cut down people’s ability to lose weight.

So if you want to lose weight… never think the following 5 types of thoughts!!!

  1. “I don’t have enough willpower and self-discipline to lose weight.” This thought will discourage you into shame and hiding. You will avoid weight loss with this thought, so do not think this thought if you want to lose weight. The fact of the matter is, willpower is something that has been created by people who are trying to take actions that go against what their brains really want. So you can try to lose weight with willpower, some people do, but it is SO MUCH HARDER than learning to retrain your brain. Your desire and love of unhealthy foods is a learned pattern, you can unlearn it with the right coach who knows how the brain works. (Me!!)

  2. “I’ve never been able to do it before, so I probably won’t ever be able to.” This one seems so logical. Our brains are like, “No really, this is simply an observation: you haven’t been able to do it before.” …. Do you LIKE that you haven’t been able to lose the weight that you want to yet? Then why define your future with this fact?! When you think this thought, you allow your past to creep into your future. You can do this if you want to, but my guess is that the results you’ve gotten in your past are NOT what you want to get in your future. So if you want new results in your future, you can TOTALLY have new results. The future is YOURS and only yours - it belongs to your FUTURE self, not the past you! Leave the past where it is. To get new results, start thinking in new ways about your body, your ability to lose weight, and weight loss in general.

  3. “Weight loss is complicated and only works for some people.” When you think this thought, your brain will gather evidence to prove how true this thought is. You’ll begin to perceive everything about weight loss as truly “complicated”, and you’ll feel overwhelmed, discouraged, and eventually apathetic. Am I a mind reader? Nope. …(Well, sort of. ;) No, I’ve just seen this time and time again. If you really want to lose weight, do not think this way. It’s just not true. Weight loss is as simple as a pully and lever - it’s as simple as 1+2=3. It is NOT as simple as ‘calories in, calories out’, but it is simple when taught the right way.

  4. I’ve always been overweight, so I probably always will be.” Unless their is a major unique medical condition in your DNA, this thought doesn’t need to be true for you. Again, this one allows your past to dictate your future. You may not think that’s what you’re doing, but when you think this way, that is exactly the result you’ll create. You “probably always will be” overweight if you continue to think this thought - this thought will keep you overweight, not the fact that you ‘always’ have been. Plus, you haven’t ‘always’ been overweight. Not when you were a baby! ;)

  5. “I can’t lose weight because I can’t give up sugar and treats.” If you believe that you “can’t give up sugar and treats”, then you will not be able to. Your THOUGHTS are creating your weight loss results, just as much or more than your eating and exercise habits. How can I say this? Well, what drives your eating choices? Your feelings/desires. We take action from emotion. And where do emotions come from? Your thoughts Willpower is when you are trying to take action from emotions that are working against the actions you’re taking. Willpower is always limited and only works for a while. That’s why most people’s new year’s resolutions putter out by March or April…. You have to start at the SOURCE of your actions, which is your emotions, which stem from your thinking.

That’s where I center my work as a weight loss coach. Thoughts — the true source of all weight loss results.
